Barton St. around 1955

As I lived in Vicarage Rd, and went to St. James junior school, I frequently went along Barton St on my travels.  There were 3 Barbers, Preens, Drinkwaters and one on the right opposite to All Saints Rd.  From the India House towards Barton Gates there were 6 Butchers, Philpots, Ted Tingles, LCM later to become Baxter’s, Waites, Sterries, Poole Bros, and Debbie’s next door to the Barbers opposite to All Saints Rd, there were 2 Greengrocers, Howels on the right and Tommy Howels, no relation just past Blenheim Rd, a Pawnbroker, Shentons, next door was Brooks the Dry cleaners, Drs. Surgery, Campbell, Horsley, and one other a very tall man.  Next door was Duckworths the Chemist, Barclays Bank, Post Office, Badhams the ironmongers, Maypole groceries and provisions, John Masons also groceries and provisions, the Co-operative store, (meat, fresh fish and provisions), The Picturedrome, Tyndale church, Beulys radio tv, Archie Smith radio and tv, Danny Cole fish and chips.  Opposite by the Gothic cottages at the rear of Archie Smiths was the Link Sound and Vision, where they first started, Goodwins the undertakers, Wagers cake shop, Arlotts cake shop next door to Tom Goddards Furniture Shop, so as you can see very little you couldn’t get or buy in Barton St.  I forgot the pubs, The Vauxhall, The Princes Plume, Jumping Jacks, that’s a recent name for the pub and the one on the corner of Millbrook st, opposite to Yarnolds, nearly forgot them and Barton Press, just a couple of coffee shops.  No takeaways in those days except Danny Coles fish and chips, nearly all Retail.
