Moor Street Tredworth

Flooding in Moor St
Royce Tranter

Moor Street, May 19th 1924 the day the River Twyver broke its banks.  The house on extreme right is no 24 Moor Street where my grandparents Christopher and Annie Jefferies lived.  The man at fence with cap is Mr Jenkins, the one holding child possibly Mr Beard, next Mr Coopey. On the left the iron railings would be the 2 houses on the corner of Albany St opposite Chritchley Shop, further up center left is the Cotswold Stone ‘Gothic Villas’ where another family of Tranters lived.  The wall with the writing is the first building (shop) in Adelaide St; alongside this shop was a narrow passage that led to the allotments.  Next to the shop in Moor St lived the Prosser family and center of picture again is the corner of Vicarage Rd.

  • When I was a child in the 1940s I remember taking curtains and clothes to Mr and Mrs Tranter to be altered. Were they your great grandparents? I have great memories of m early years living in Melbourne Street and remember Coopeys and Prosser familys living there. There was also Mr Coward the Coalman and I thought that Robert’s toy factory was next to his yard but have been told that it was in Upton Street. I think there was a factory there? My husband thinks it may have been a balloon factory? My maiden name was Davis and my Grandparents, the Robert’s, lived next door to us, and my Auntie and family the Buckleys lived next door but one. Great community in those days!
